The Rise of Fake Jobs: How to Spot and Steer Clear of Scams
There are a LOT of bad-faith job postings right now on all of the major job and freelance platforms. There are numerous reports of fake jobs being used to harvest personal contact information or to sell products/services as a pre-employment requirement (e.g. candidates must pay for their background check).
or right when they get hired (e.g. bad check sent to cover cost of equipment that you must buy from this website, but you cannot return the equipment or get a refund when the job and check turn out to be fake). Companies are also posting jobs that they do not intend to fill because analysts pay attention to job openings as a sign of fiscal health and company growth. Job seekers are getting wary and frustrated. If a job seems too good to be true then it must be a scam.
The number of job boards is exploding right now. Job searches are getting more and more niche. Applicants are focusing more energy and effort on these smaller spaces because they feel that the competition for an open job will be far smaller. If I am of African descent and I have an MBA and I want to work in video game development, why would I waste my time and energy applying for gigs on Indeed, LinkedIn, Fiverr, or UpWork, when I can be one of five candidate on one of the Black MBA Gamers job boards? (This also lowers my exposure to scams as those sites are too small to attract as many scammers.)
The only other thing that might be working against you is the offer you are posting. Are the role and the results clearly defined? Is the compensation competitive for the type of project and the required knowledge, skills, and experience? (Also, keep in mind that different platforms attract different candidates with different expectations. On Reddit you have folks who are more tech savvy and financially well-off compared to the Facebook crowd in the Philippines because of the requirements to stay connected and have reliable Internet access. Thus, someone who is on Reddit has expectations of a higher salary than say someone who is using OLJ.)
I hope this is useful...
